Plinth Gallery at 3520 Brighton Blvd in Denver’s RiNo Art District is pleased to present an exhibition of work by Iowa artist Heidi McKay Casto from June 6 through July 26, 2025. Casto’s ceramic objects—adorned with playful design elements, anthropomorphic animal portraits, and vibrant colors—exist at the nexus of function and sculpture. The pieces are an accessible way to add a bit of fun to any collection and make for delightful gifts. The exhibition opens on First Friday on June 6, 6-9 p.m., and visitors are welcome to view and purchase work during regular gallery hours Thursday-Saturday, 12 p.m.-5 p.m., and by appointment through the run of the show.

“By bringing into question the similarities between instinctual animal behaviors and habits learned through my lived experience as a woman, artist, and mother, I hope to gain insight and inspiration for living with fewer insecurities and societal pressures.” Explains Casto. “My desire is for the work to be a synchronistic exchange of connection, where care and beauty are vibrant in daily life, and where complex human emotions might be made more discernible through light-hearted depictions of personified animal subjects.”

Heidi McKay Casto lives in Iowa City, Iowa, where she is a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa. She earned a BFA degree in Ceramics from The Ohio State University, and MA and MFA degrees from The University of Iowa. Casto’s work has been featured in over fifty group exhibitions. She has been a featured artist with ArtAxis.org, was selected for two purchase prizes in the 2022 Strictly Functional Pottery National and was named a 2022 Ceramics Monthly Magazine Emerging Artist. Casto was recognized as an Emerging Artist at the 2023 National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts Conference (NCECA).
